RESUMO

The red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta (Buren), left most of its natural enemies behind in South America when it arrived in Mobile, AL, in the 1930s and spread rapidly throughout the southeastern United States, reaching population levels up to 10 times those found in South America. The large population densities and propensity for disturbed habitats led to direct conflict with human activities. Bait control methods were first developed for fire ants in the early 1960s and little has changed in the subsequent decades, despite the drawback that the bait carrier rapidly breaks down when wet. The southeast United States is wet; thus, bait labels have various guidance-restricting applications based on potential wet conditions. Here we compare a hydrophobic fire ant bait to the equivalent standard bait formulation and demonstrate in a paired-mound field experiment under natural wet conditions in Florida (heavy dew on ground), a significant advantage for the hydrophobic bait. An effective hydrophobic ant bait would extend the utility of current bait insecticides to wet conditions and also fill an important gap in our ability to control invasive pest ant species that thrive in wet tropical and subtropical habitats, e.g., Wasmannia auropunctata (Roger), the little fire ant.

House features contribute to house dust mite abundance and, therefore, exposure to mite allergens. Our study assessed the hypothesis that modernization of the domestic environment in a tropical setting may lead to a level of allergen from the house dust mites Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Trouessart) and D. farinae Hughes that previously has been defined clinically as at risk for people who suffer from allergic disease. Allergen (Der p 1 and Der f 1) levels were measured at 4 sites (mattress, bedroom floor, living room floor, and furniture) in 17 houses in Barbados during dry and rainy seasons. Der p 1(17 of 17 homes) at all 4 sites did not vary significantly from the dry to rainy season. Allergen levels varied according to site, and were highest in living room furniture in both seasons (geometric mean 40.37 and 64.17 micrograms/g, respectively). Concentration of Der p 1 allergens were higher in concrete than in wood or mixed concrete and wood houses. Der f 1(9 of 17 homes) levels were lower than Der p 1 by 1/1,000 (both seasons). Results indicate that season is less important in regard to levels of Der p 1 than house construction and confirm other studies that implicate D. pteronyssinus as a more abundant source of allergen than D. farinae in this tropical setting.

The Air Sentinel and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membranes were used to capture airborne particles over living colonies of German or American cockroaches. Silver-stained SDS-PAGE gels revealed protein bands at 80, 55, 36, and several bands below the 33-kD marker. SDS-PAGE/immunoblots of PTFE eluates from German cockroach colonies incubated with serum from cockroach-sensitive individuals revealed IgE-binding bands with apparent molecular weights of 36 and 80 kD. Only the 36-kD allergen and allergens below the 33-kD marker were evident in the American PTFE eluate. ELISA analysis with a monoclonal antibody assay identified the presence of both Bla g I and Bla g II in the German PTFE eluate. No Bla g I or Bla g II could be identified in the American PTFE eluate. These studies demonstrate that in addition to Bla g I and Bla g II, several other aerosolized allergens become airborne over cockroach colonies and may be important in the environment where cockroaches are abundant.

Stable fly adults were collected from 16 locations within the state of Florida and from locations in six other states in an attempt to determine the source of stable fly populations along Florida beaches on the Gulf of Mexico. Electrophoretic analyses were made of a minimum of 10 enzymes in each of 37 separate populations. Extremely low heterozygosity resulted in an inability to use standard genetic identity and distance procedures for determining the divergence of allopatric populations to establish the source of flies captured from beach areas where reproduction was unlikely. Comparisons of rare alleles in populations grouped geographically, computations of number of possible migrants, and analysis of conditional average frequency of alleles led to the conclusion that flies captured on Florida beaches come from a variety of sites, with locations northwest of the beaches contributing the majority of flies in outbreaks.
